What Happened?
Shares of health insurance company Alignment Healthcare (NASDAQ:ALHC) jumped 8.6% in the afternoon session after Alignment Health Plan, its subsidiary, announced that its new Central Health Harmony Medicare Advantage plan will be available in Los Angeles and Orange counties beginning January 1, 2027.
The plan includes care with more than 600 Chinese-, Korean-, and Vietnamese-speaking primary care doctors. Network partners for the offering include Astrana Health and Hoag. TD Cowen analyst Ryan Langston lowered his price target on Alignment to $12 from $21 while maintaining a Buy rating, per research cited by StreetInsider.
Langston reduced second-half adjusted EBITDA projections by approximately $16 million on inpatient utilization pressure, but observed that the $12 target still implies significant upside at $7,500 to $8,000 per member. The gain offered relief after shares plunged 13.4% during the previous session.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Alignment Healthcare’s shares are very volatile and have had 29 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 3 days ago when the stock dropped 19.2% on the news that William Blair downgraded the company to Market Perform from Outperform following a regulatory filing detailing lower quality ratings. In research covered by TipRanks, William Blair analyst Ryan Daniels lowered his rating without a price target, warning that upcoming third-quarter results will "reveal challenges in cost trends that could persist into the near future."
Daniels added that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services lowering Alignment’s flagship contract from 4.0 to 3.5 stars creates an earnings overhang that will make it difficult for the stock to work over the next 12 months. Alignment disclosed in a Form 8-K filing that contract H3815, which covers roughly 75% of its health plan membership, fell to a 3.5-star rating for 2027, putting federal quality bonus payments for fiscal 2028 at risk. The company stated that it intends to pursue administrative appeals and litigation challenging CMS calculations and methodologies to restore the contract to a 4.0-star rating.
For Medicare Advantage insurers, reaching the 4.0-star threshold is essential to capturing federal quality bonus payments that subsidize competitive supplemental benefits and protect plan margins. When a flagship contract drops below that benchmark while medical cost trends are rising, the loss of future funding compresses operating leverage, leaving equity valuation depressed long before administrative appeals play out.
Alignment Healthcare is down 59.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $8.25 per share, it is trading 66.4% below its 52-week high of $24.56 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Alignment Healthcare’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $484.71.
